You can find all information about the future of the NFL in Germany in this article.
Berlin is coming into play as an NFL venue
Shortly after the NFL game in Munich between the Carolina Panthers and the New York Giants, Berlin entered the game as a potential host of NFL games and caused a stir in Germany. The Berlin Senate has now cleared the way for NFL games in the Olympic Stadium. “The Senate has decided, based on my House’s submission, that the sports metropolis of Berlin will apply to host NFL games in the long term,” said Sports Senator Spranger happily.
Specifically, it’s about the games between 2025 and 2029. If approved, Berlin wants to invest up to 12.5 million euros. In addition to classic football, the capital also wants to apply to host the 2026 Flag Football World Cup and benefit from the hype surrounding American football.
No more NFL in Frankfurt and Munich in the future?
A decision on the allocation of the games is still pending, but the speculation about an NFL game in Berlin is also raising questions about the previous NFL locations in Munich and Frankfurt. If a commitment is made in favor of Berlin, will there soon be no more games in these two cities? The NFL played a game in Germany for the first time in Munich in 2022. After two games were played in Frankfurt last year, another game took place in Munich’s Allianz Arena in November of this year.
NFL boss Roger Goodell said ahead of the NFL game in Munich: “I usually tell people, ‘Don’t believe the rumors.’ In that case I might say, ‘Believe it. We’re working on it, but it hasn’t been decided yet. We think Berlin would be a great addition and that’s why we’re looking into it very closely. Our people worked very hard on it,” said the 65-year-old NFL Commissioner. But regarding the question of whether NFL games in Berlin would mean an end to games in Frankfurt and Munich for the time being, Goodell noted: “But I would like to add that that doesn’t mean we won’t come back to Frankfurt and Munich .” It is therefore quite possible that three cities will share the hosting of NFL games in the coming years.
