Chosen sixth overall in the 2019 draft, Jones was in his sixth season in the Big Apple. After a promising season in 2022, he signed a huge four-year pact which would bring him a total of $160 million in the long term.
Two years later, the Giants decided they’d had enough. Jones has won just 3 of his last 16 starts, in which he has just 10 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
A few days earlier, the New York team had decided to bench Jones and entrust the reins of the attack to young Tommy DeVito. Jones had been relegated to the role of second reserve, behind Drew Lock, mainly for economic reasons, since his contract provided for guaranteed compensation of $23 million in the event of injury.
The Giants ultimately won’t have to worry about it since Jones is now no longer with the team.
With a 2-8 record this season, they will have the chance to draft early in the next NFL auction and should normally have a pivot in their sights.
