It was a historic day for Swiss tennis. On 23. November 2014 The Swiss won the Davis Cup for the first time. In the final, the Golden Generation around Roger and Stan Wawrinka beat France 3-1.
Not everything initially went according to plan for the Swiss. Although Wawrinka defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in four sets in the first singles on November 21st, Federer then suffered a surprising three-set defeat against Gaƫl Monfils. With a three-set win against Julien Benneteau and Richard Gasquet in doubles a day later, the two national heroes finally paved the way to the title.
The match against the seven-time Wimbledon winner Federer became a lesson for Gasquet. Despite back problems, the then number two in the world defeated the French substitute 6:4, 6:2 and 6:2. Gasquet stepped in for Tsonga, who had an elbow injury.
The last individual no longer had to be held. Switzerland was determined to be the winner. “This is a moving moment for me, I’ve been waiting for this for so long,” said Federer.
