Berlin has officially applied to host games of the US National Football League (NFL) in the years 2025 to 2029. Following a submission from Interior and Sports Senator Iris Spranger, the Senate has now decided to begin the application process for games of the sport American football, which is also popular in Germany. The application for games in the Olympic Stadium is supplemented by measures to further develop the sports of American football and flag football, including in youth and school sports.
Sports Senator Iris Spranger: “American football is an absolute trend sport, and Berlin is one of the leading international sports metropolises. That belongs together. The sports metropolis of Berlin, with its excellent infrastructure and sports-loving Berliners, is also an ideal venue for American football. After the World and European Athletics Championships, the DFB Cup final and the UEFA Euro 2024 games, NFL games would be a great next step for major international sport in Berlin in the Olympic Stadium.“
In addition to an image gain, the Senate also expects significant economic value creation from numerous national and international visitors and sustainable impulses for tourism. The application for the NFL games is accompanied by a sports development program from the Berlin Senate for American football and the contactless variant flag football.
