David Richter and Teodor Mihai Vasile dominate the international U10 competition at the Rafa Nadal Academy.
2021 Jakob Mittermayr, 2022 Luca Sageder, 2023 Lena Angleitner in the Austrian final against Nina Buchegger: Red-white-red coups have long been a tradition at the international children’s Masters Joy of moving Tennis Trophy in the U10 age group. This has now continued in 2024 – this time with the boys, who won big at the final tournament at the Rafa Nadal Academy on Mallorca from October 28th to 31st. The ÖTV young talent, who had first qualified at national level, successfully performed on the Spanish holiday island against strong competition from a total of eleven other nations. Bulgaria, France, Greece, Italy, Cape Verde, Croatia, Luxembourg, Poland, Romania, Switzerland and Hungary also sent the young representatives to the event initiated by the Ferrero Group.
The long list of successes: For the boys, Teodor Mihai Vasile and David Richter secured a purely domestic, final summit meeting with three wins each – with 6:2, 4:6 and 10:6 in the match tiebreak with the better end for the latter. For the girls, Anastasia Weiler and Ella Giulia Eder had to go to the consolation (consolation competition) after losing in the first round, where second and third places were at least achieved. Weiler lost in the final to Bulgarian Kayra Aleksieva with the same result as Eder in the semi-final (3:6). And red-white-red was also the fashion color number one in the mixed doubles: Vasile turned the fun around and won the title fight with Aleksieva against Richter and the Italian Mattia Sena 6:3. Previously, Vasile and Aleksieva had also eliminated Weiler and the Pole Wiktor Mroczek in the semifinals and Eder and the Swiss Loris Isakaj in the quarterfinals. That’s not all: Weiler also received the Fair Play Prize, following in the footsteps of Marie Schmidhofer, who was awarded it as a finalist in 2022.
Kondert: “A reward for what happens during the year”
The impressive Austrian performance naturally also made ÖTV U10 national coach Martin Kondert, who looked after the local kids in Manacor, extremely happy. “It’s nice to have a red-white-red final again for the girls like last year – and in the case of both, it’s well-deserved. I’ve already speculated that there will be at least one semi-final, but the fact that it turns out that way is of course extremely pleasing. It was a more than worthy final.” In addition to the successes in the doubles, Kondert was particularly pleased with Weiler: “She played a really good game in the consolation final against her Bulgarian opponent and came out of the affair more than decently and well. These were all important experiences. And you often get more valuable information from a defeat than from a victory,” said the Salzburg native.
Kondert’s conclusion was positive across the board: “The girls and boys did really well and developed really well – also when it came to things off the court. You were certainly able to take a lot with you from these days. And the fact that the Fair Play Award almost always goes to our kids is definitely no coincidence. The values that they are given by their parents, their coaches at home and in the kids tennis system are simply right. A system in which they can develop extremely well in terms of sport and in which fair play is also very important.” For Kondert, the successes on Mallorca were “a reward for what happens during the year. In addition to the training and support from parents, which is not a given, the presence of children at the ÖTV Kids Cat. 1 and invitation tournaments in Austria contributes to many games at a high level and its fruits. This way the kids can then make their presence felt internationally.”
