The fight between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul on Netflix illustrates a sad development: boxing is unable to market itself through sport. The future: Celebrity Big Brother with drama and amateur brawls.
The clear loser of this Netflix spectacle on Friday evening: the sport of boxing. And that doesn’t even have anything to do with the fight between boxing legend Mike Tyson and self-marketing genius Jake Paul. It was a boxing match in the same way as a leisure kick between the 1990 soccer world champions and district league heroes or a race between Carl Lewis and fitness influencers. Netflix can’t help it either; the entertainment group is a content provider for the masses. According to the company’s own information, 65 million accounts were switched on worldwide, and at least 50 million for the great battle before it – more than ever before in women’s boxing.
