NEW YORK – Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates and teammate Luis Gil of the New York Yankees have been named Baseball Digest’s Rookies of the Year.
Skenes, the top pick in the 2023 amateur draft, has impressed in his first season in the big leagues. After debuting on May 11, he caused such a stir that he was selected to start the National League All-Star Game on July 16 in Texas.
The 22-year-old right-hander finished 11-3 with a 1.96 ERA in 23 starts. He struck out 170 and walked 32 in 133 innings.
Skenes received nine of the top 11 spots for the National League Award from the Baseball Writers and Broadcasters Group. The results were published by the journal.
San Diego Padres outfielder Jackson Merrill received the remaining two first-place votes and finished second.
Gil was 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA in 29 starts for the American League champions. He struck out 171 in 151 2/3 innings.
The 26-year-old right fielder was chosen first in six American League awards. Baltimore Orioles outfielder Colton Kouser finished second with three first-place votes, and Oakland Athletics closer Mason Miller finished third with two.
