New York, United States.- Paul Skenesof the Pittsburgh Piratesand his colleague Luis Gilof the New York Yankeeswere chosen Rookies of the Year by the magazine Baseball Digest.
The top pick in the 2023 amateur draft, Skenes dazzled during his first season in the Big Leagues. After making his debut on May 11, he was such an immediate sensation that he was selected to open the All-Star Game of the National League on July 16 in Texas.
The 22-year-old right-hander finished 11-3 with a 1.96 ERA in 23 starts. He struck out 170 batters and walked 32 in 133 innings.
He was the first Pittsburgh rookie to be called to the All-Star Game since second baseman Tommy Womack in 1997 and became the first rookie pitcher to start the Midseason Classic since Hideo Nomo in 1995.
He gets on the boat
Skenes received nine of the 11 first-place votes for the National League award from a panel of baseball writers and broadcasters. The results were announced by the publication on Thursday.
Skenes is the fifth member of the Pirates to be honored by Baseball Digest as Rookie of the Year, joining Johnny Ray (1982), Jason Kendall (1996), Warren Morris (1999) and Jason Bay (2004).
An 11-member panel determined the winners through independent votes. Each candidate received three points for each first place vote, two for second and one for third place.
San Diego Padres outfielder Jackson Merrillearned the other two first-place votes and came in second.
Gil dazzles
Gil was 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA in 29 starts for the AL champions. American League. He had 171 strikeouts in 151 and two-thirds innings.
The 26-year-old right-hander was chosen first on six ballots for the American League award. Baltimore Orioles outfielder Colton Cowsercame in second with three first-place votes, and the closer of the Oakland AthleticsMason Miller, finished third with two.
Gil is the third Yankee player to be recognized by Baseball Digest as Rookie of the Year, along with Derek Jeter (1996) y Aaron Judge (2017).
