The dressage rider Isabell Werth has been honored with a Pegasos award as a “Legend of the Sport” for her achievements in dressage riding. The eight-time Olympic dressage champion received the honor at the 42nd German Sports Press Ball. “It’s a great honor, especially when I see what a great circle I move in,” she said.
Werth is considered the most successful German participant with eight gold and six silver medals Olympia. At the Summer Olympics in Paris this year, she won team gold and individual silver. The 55-year-old was open about the possible continuation of her career at the Olympics in the future. “We’ll just wait and see – year after year. And then we’ll see,” said Werth, referring to the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028. Werth competed in a total of seven Olympic Games. She took part for the first time in Barcelona in 1992.
The “Legend of Sports” honor honors the life’s work of outstanding personalities who are honored for their legendary sporting achievements, but also actively contribute to society through charitable commitment. The award has been presented at the German Sports Press Ball since 2007.
In the past, former soccer world champion Philipp Lahm, former biathlon aces Magdalena Neuner and Laura Dahlmeier, Olympic figure skating champion Katarina Witt, former Wimbledon winner Boris Becker and ex-triathlon star Jan Frodeno, among others, received the honor.
The various honorary titles at the German Sports Press Ball were combined in 2014 to form the so-called Pegasos Prize. In addition to the “Legend of Sports”, prizes will also be awarded in the categories “Athlete with Heart”, “Sports Media” and the “Special Honor for Special Merits”.
