Big blow for Williamson and the Pelicans
Williamson suffered the injury in the second quarter of Wednesday’s loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. He left the game but returned and scored 23 more points in the second half. Still, he missed Friday’s game against the Orlando Magic, which was his fourth missed game this season.
The injury is a huge blow to the Pelicans and especially to Williamson himself. Team officials believe he is in the best shape of his career. Since the Pelicans selected Williamson first overall in the draft in 2019, the 6-foot-1, 250-pound power forward has missed 210 of a possible 400 regular season games.
Williamson’s injury is part of a series of absences for the Pelicans, who were recently missing six of their eight top scorers, including Dejounte Murray, Trey Murphy III, CJ McCollum and Jordan Hawkins, against the Magic. Forward Herb Jones is also out due to a shoulder injury. The Pelicans, who have lost four straight games and seven of their last eight, have no games until Monday when they host the Brooklyn Nets.
