Professional basketball team Seoul SK defeated Wonju DB, led by Jamil Warney, who scored a whopping 42 points, and took the sole lead with 4 consecutive wins.
SK defeated DB 88-80 in the 2024-2025 KCC professional basketball regular league away game held at Wonju Sports Complex on the 12th.
SK, with 4 consecutive wins, went from tied for 1st place with Daegu Korea Gas Corporation to the sole leader (8 wins, 2 losses).
On the contrary, DB fell from tied for 9th place with Seoul Samsung to sole last place (2 wins, 8 losses).
As it was the last game before the break in the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Asia Cup qualifiers, both teams gave their all in a fierce match.
Until the beginning of the fourth quarter, the gap between the two teams rarely widened beyond 4 points.
The game was decided in the last minute.
With 1 minute and 2 seconds left, Warney received a foul from DB Kim Young-hyun and succeeded in both free throws to put SK ahead 80-78.
In the ensuing DB attack, Chinanu Onuaku attempted a shot under the goal with Warney in front, but it failed.
With 12 seconds left, Young-Jun Ahn scored a 3-pointer from the left to make it 83-78, a 5-point gap, swinging the pendulum towards SK.
Warney intercepted the ball from DB Kim Si-rae, who grabbed the defensive rebound before Young-jun Ahn scored, and there was an uproar over whether this was a foul or not.
While the DB crowd booed loudly, DB coach Kim Joo-seong protested harshly and was ejected with a technical foul.
It is also noteworthy that Choi Bu-kyung’s foul and Onuaku’s unsportsmanlike foul (U-foul) were declared at the same time after Onuaku hit SK Choi Bu-kyung in the face while trying to shake off SK’s Choi Bu-kyung, who was trying to steal the ball, during a DB attack about 5 minutes before the end. This contributed to the angry reaction of DB players and fans.
Warney’s performance shined the most, as he scored 42 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, scoring 42 points regardless of whether he was under the goal or outside the goal (successfully hitting 4 3-pointers).
Warney’s highest score in a professional basketball game was 46, but he was only 4 points short of this.
Youngjun Ahn contributed to the victory by scoring 19 points, including 5 3-pointers, and grabbing 11 rebounds.
