The best African player of the year will be known during the CAF Awards 2024 ceremony on December 16 in Marrakech (Morocco). This Monday, CAF (Confederation of African Football) revealed the five finalists.
Achraf Hakimi, PSG defender and captain of the Morocco selection, appears in this short list. For this title, which is similar to the African Ballon d’Or, he will face Ronwen Williams (Goalkeeper, South Africa/Mamelodi Sundowns), Simon Adingra (Striker, Ivory Coast/Brighton & Hove Albion), Serhou Guirassy (Striker, Guinea/Borussia Dortmund) and Ademola Lookman (forward, Nigeria/Atalanta Bergamo).
The winner will succeed Victor Osimhen (Nigeria) who is not among the other finalists, just like the 2022 and 2021 winners, Sadio Mané (Senegal) and Mohamed Salah (Egypt).
Among the finalists for the other trophies, we find several other Ligue 1 players such as Yahia Fofana (Côte d’Ivoire/Angers) among the goalkeepers or Oumar Diakité (Côte d’Ivoire/Reims), Eliesse Ben Seghir (Morocco/Monaco) and Lamine Camara (Senegal Monaco).
Sébastien Desabre, the French coach of the Democratic Republic of Congo, semi-finalist of the CAN, is a candidate for the title of best coach against Hugo Broos (South Africa), Pedro Gonçalves (Angola), Émerse Faé (Ivory Coast ) and Marcel Koller (Al Ahly).
