Referee Blunders at Sparta: Hlavatý’s Controversial Non-Expulsion Under Review

The FAČR Referee Commission reprimanded the referees for three fouls after the 14th round of the first league. They made two mistakes in favor of Sparta in Saturday’s duel with Ostrava at Letná, where they should not have recognized the goal of Prague and in the end they should have sent off Matěj Ryneš. In České Budějovice, the referee forgave Liberec’s Michal Hlavaté a second yellow, i.e. red card. The Commission stated this in a communique.

In terms of errors, the last round was one of the least successful of the season so far. Based on the manual, the commission always publicly evaluates four situations chosen by the media. She criticized the referees for the higher number of fumbles only in the 7th round.

On Saturday in Sparta, the referees, headed by head Dalibor Černý, first made a mistake in the 12th minute, when they recognized the home team’s Asger Sörensen’s goal to make it 1:0, even though the Danish defender played with his hand. Video referee Ondřej Berka should have intervened.

“A player of the home team touched the ball with his hand and scored a goal immediately afterwards. It was a foul, the VAR (video referee) incorrectly did not intervene,” the commission explained.

In the eighth minute of regulation, fullback Ryneš should have been sent off for a rough tackle on substitute Matúš Rusnák. Černý only awarded him a yellow card. “It was about hitting an opponent in the head and neck area, it was a foul committed out of frustration and without trying to play the ball. VAR did not intervene wrongly,” the commission said.

Baník, despite being damaged by the judges, turned the score around and won 3:1 at Letná after two penalties. The journalists did not choose any of the penalty kicks among the four situations from the round.

Ondřej Pechanec also committed a mistake, who should have awarded Hlavaté a second yellow card in České Budějovice in the 79th minute for tripping Marcel Čermák. Slovan played the full game at the Dynamo stadium and drew without goals.

“The referee mistakenly did not award a second yellow and subsequently a red card to a player of the visiting team for tripping an opponent. VAR did not intervene correctly according to the protocol,” the commission pointed out that the video referee cannot deal with the awarding of yellow cards.

In the 90th minute of Hradec Králové’s duel with Slavia, substitute Ondřej Mihálik fell in the penalty area after a fight with Jan Bořil, but referee Jan Beneš did not award a penalty and on the contrary awarded the home player a yellow card for allegedly simulating. The match ended in a 1:1 draw.

“The referee did not award the penalty kick correctly. There was contact between a player of the away team and the home team, but it was not a foul. The referee subsequently wrongly awarded a yellow card to the home player for simulation, it was not an obvious attempt to deceive him.” the commission said.
