Venue: Osaka Public University. This is the first venue since Osaka City University and Osaka Prefecture University merged in 2022.

The “Former Sansho University Judo Tournament,” a competition between Hitotsubashi University, formerly the University of Commerce, Kobe University, and Osaka Public University, was held on November 23rd at Osaka Public University.

The tournament was founded in 1931 (Showa 6). Although it was temporarily closed due to World War II, it was revived in 1953 as the former Sansho University Judo Tournament, and this year marks the 72nd time.

The format of the match is a 15-person team match. The rules have their roots in the Kodokan Match Referee Regulations, and aim to make the most of both tate-waza and ground-waza, stipulating that “Win-waza and ground-waza are determined by waza-waza and warnings,” “effective pull-ups are allowed, and ground-waza should be watched for a long time.” .

Competition report

In the first game, Hitotsubashi University defeated Kobe University with five players remaining. In the second match, Osaka Public University defeated Kobe University with three players remaining, and the championship match was decided between the two schools that won the first match.

A heated battle between Osaka Public University’s ace Masahiko Wakabayashi and Hitotsubashi University’s captain Haru Adachi.

A match between Osaka Public University, aiming for their first championship in 14 years, and Hitotsubashi University, aiming for a consecutive victory. There were two players short of the full 15-member lineup, so the competition consisted of 13 members.

The first half continued to be a good game, with each team being outclassed, but things started to change in the 6th game between the six players. For Osaka Public University, Ryota Nishimura, a skilled player from Tenri High School, will be on the mat, while for Hitotsubashi University, international student Juraj Pavlovich, who won his previous match, will be on the tatami. In this match, which consisted of a series of fierce attacks and defenses, Nishimura won the match by landing a spectacular Ogoshi at the end. The flow of the first half was on Osaka Public University’s side.

However, here Hitotsubashi University’s captain, Haru Adachi, appeared. Starting with Nishimura’s “Ippon”, he overtook three players and brought Osaka Public University’s absolute ace Masahiko Wakabayashi to the tatami. Wakabayashi calmly overtook Adachi, who looked tired, first with his combined technique “Ippon,” then Kosuke Oishi and Yutaro Fujita. Osaka Public University is in the lead with a score difference of one person.

At this point, Hitotsubashi University’s six ace generals, Umana Nishioka, finally appeared. Showing good progress as expected. First, Wakabayashi, who remained on the tatami mat, won by one with his specialty, Osotogari. After that, he continued to make “Ippon” one after another, and actually overtook six people. With Osaka Public University running out, captain Shuhei Nakao, who is sitting in the general position, retaliated with a small sotogari “Ippon”, but for Hitotsubashi University, point-getter Kei Negawa, who went on to the tatami, showed a calm battle. . He ended the match with a combination move, “Ippon”.

Kudos to Hitotsubashi University, which has talented players in the rearguard. They won with five players remaining and won the championship for the second consecutive year. Osaka Public University is the runner-up for the first time in 12 years.

There can only be one draw in the championship game. The rules make it difficult to determine who is better or worse when it comes to fouls, so the game is always a matter of “take it or be taken.” It was a worthwhile battle.

The players from both schools, who fought with all their might, received applause from the audience, which was filled with alumni and officials from each university. Voices of praise echoed throughout the hall.

Women’s team match/OB friendly match

(Large) Rena Kotani 〇 Gokegata △ Mai Kitagawa

After the men’s match, a new women’s team match was held.
The number of female club members at Kobe University and Osaka Public University is increasing year by year, and this project was created in response to this trend. Adopting the “Sansho University Rules,” the match was a three-man match, with Osaka Public University’s spearhead Kimura taking the lead. Kobe University’s midfielders and generals Nakano and Kotani took the lead, resulting in a come-from-behind victory for Kobe University. This time it was held between two schools, but if all three schools can participate in the women’s team competition, we can hope for further development of this tournament.

At the annual alumni friendly match, the venue suddenly became more peaceful, with cheers, roars, and laughter spilling out at the techniques performed by the former famous players. This is an important initiative in the sense that it encourages lifelong judo.

“Spirit of co-prosperity for self and others”

Athletes and officials from the three schools who participated in the tournament

One of the charms of the Old Sansho Taisen is that it doesn’t end with just the “games.” The winners will congratulate each other on their victory with all the members, and the losers will pledge to their friends to win next year and beyond. Not only the players but also the alumni who support them feel the same way. This year as well, a joint social gathering was held between the three universities after the game, where they praised each other’s efforts, exchanged cheers, and ended the tournament with the singing of the club song. In recent years, tournaments have also been streamed on YouTube with the cooperation of each university’s alumni association, in order to make these competitions more appealing to more people. In order for this tournament, which boasts a long history, to further develop, exchange and cooperation based on this “spirit of mutual prosperity” is essential. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people involved and alumni who cooperated.

Comment from Hitotsubashi University captain Haru Adachi
“Regardless of the outcome of the match, the players fought with all their might, the seniors who passionately cheered us on, and the teachers who watched over us and gave us guidance. If any one of them had been missing, I am sure the result would have been different. I would like to thank everyone involved in the former Sansho Taisen because each and every player was able to fulfill their role even more than before, even though the number of participants was smaller than last year.
