Points awarded in badminton

In our badminton shop we not only want to offer the best products, but also useful information to improve your game.
Basic rules of badminton
Badminton is played on a rectangular court separated by a net. The aim is to hit the shuttlecock over the badminton net into the opponent’s court with a racket.
How does scoring work in badminton?
Scoring in badminton is very simple once you’ve heard it:
- Rally scoring system: Badminton uses a “rally scoring system”. This means that every rally results in a point, regardless of who is serving. This system ensures faster and more exciting games.
- Games and sentences: A match is played according to the “best-of-3” principle, meaning whoever wins 2 sets first also wins the match. The first player to reach 21 points wins the set provided they are two points ahead. If the score is 20-20, the set continues until one player reaches 30 points or has a two-point lead, e.g. 22-20. With the score at 29-29, only one point is needed to win the set.
- Change of sides: Players switch sides after each set and in the third set once a player has reached 11 points. This ensures a level playing field and reduces the impact of advantages such as: B. caused by the wind direction (ventilation) or the lighting.
- Serve and acceptance: The server must serve diagonally to the opponent’s service box. In singles, the server changes when the receiver has scored a point. This also happens in doubles, but then the server also changes between team members. Example: Assuming that Player 1 from Team A serves and the opponent scores a point, then Player 1 from Team B may now serve. If team A then scores another point, player 2 from team A can serve.
- Errors and “let calls”: A rally can be ended by a mistake, e.g. B. by a hit into the net, a hit with the shuttle outside the court or an incorrect serve. In some cases a “let” can be given, meaning the rally is repeated without winning a point.
