Shane Larkin’s Triumphant Return to the National Team: What It Means for Fans and Future Competitions

National Basketball Team Head Coach Ergin Ataman announced that Shane Larkin returned to the National Team.

Larkin will be on the team at EuroBasket 2025.

Speaking on the Off The RECourt program, Ergin Ataman said, “I know that Shane wants to help Turkish basketball. He was a little hesitant at first because of what happened last year, but then he was very kind and we understood each other well. Now, I believe that Shane will be with us, too. Also, I believe that Scottie Wilbekin will be ready and play when necessary.” he said.

Turkish Basketball Federation removed the domestic status of Shane Larkin and Scotti Wilbekin due to the problems experienced.

WHAT HAPPENED?

National Team Head Coach Ergin Ataman announced that Wilbekin and Larkin did not want to join the national team.

Speaking to Socrates, Ataman said, “We announced the National Team about two weeks before the camp. When we announce the squad, a notification is sent to all clubs. We also included two of our recruited players in the squad. As we heard while announcing the squad, these players are very busy due to injury and fatigue.” Since we knew they were not hot, we invited both of them to the squad to avoid discrimination. It turned out that both of them did not volunteer to play, just as we worried. Larkin came to the city on the day the Istanbul camp started and had a serious edema in his knee. Larkin was treated for two weeks and a second MRI was performed. It was concluded that there was a significant improvement, but another week was needed. Our main plan was to continue the treatment for another week and save Larkin for the last week of the tournament, the semi-final and final stages, with individual training. But after the second MRI, Larkin disappeared. Our doctors invited him to see him, we invited him, the federation invited him, at least let’s be together, let’s talk, ‘What plan will we make?’ “… There was no news from him again after that,” he said.
