Shaq Barrett plans to return after retiring in the summer

Shaq Barrett, who unexpectedly announced his retirement five months ago, is aiming for his NFL comeback. His agents announced that Barrett has applied for reinstatement to the NFL in order to get back to playing as quickly as possible.

His rights are currently held by the Miami Dolphins, who signed him in March. The outside linebacker, who is ready to play for Miami, described his decision to retire before the offseason on Instagram as unexpected for many, but clearly justified for himself.

Barrett played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2019 to 2023 and won the Super Bowl with them in 2020. His NFL career began in 2014 as an undrafted player with the Denver Broncos. He quickly established himself as a key player in Tampa Bay and led the league with 19.5 sacks in 2019. After he was released by the Bucs for financial reasons, the Dolphins secured his services before he unexpectedly resigned.

Should Barrett be reinstated, he could be a valuable reinforcement for the Dolphins, whose pass rush is currently weak. With just 21 sacks, they rank in the bottom third of the league. Despite these shortcomings, Miami has kept its playoff hopes alive with three straight wins. With Barrett, the chances certainly wouldn’t decrease.
