Title favorite Jannik Sinner also won his second group game at the ATP Finals in Turin without losing a set.
The Italian defeated the American Taylor Fritz on Tuesday in a repeat of the US Open final 6:4, 6:4.
Before that, the Russian Daniil Medvedev had achieved his first success at this Turin tennis event against the Australian Alex de Minaur with 6:2, 6:4.
Before the last matchday of the “Ilie Nastase” group, the question of promotion is still open.
Sinner promotion not yet fixed
Because Sinner could theoretically fall out of the two promotion ranks on Thursday if he lost 2-0 in a set against Medvedev, provided Fritz also wins against De Minaur without losing a set. Even De Minaur, who is still winless, is not completely out of the race yet.
However, it seems very likely that Sinner will achieve what is necessary for promotion to the semi-finals; he acted too callously against Fritz. The really important points went to the world number one, so he made up for 0:30 on his own serve at 3:3 in the second round.
“It was a very tough match, we know each other very well,” said Sinner in the “Sky” interview after the 1:40-hour match. “He (Fritz, note) was very aggressive. I tried to serve well in the important moments. If he broke me at 0:30 in the second set, the momentum could have changed.”
The 23-year-old once again emphasized the importance of supporting his compatriots in the stands.
Balanced head-to-head
Medvedev’s breaks in the first set against De Minaur were enough to make it 2:1 and 4:1, and he took advantage of the first opportunity to make it 6:2.
In the second round, De Minaur held on until 4:4 before he had to give up his service decisively. Medvedev served with the first match point after 80 minutes.
In the head-to-head with Sinner it is 7:7, the local hero is currently the favorite.
