The FTSV Jahn Brinkum men’s 40 team returned from the opening game of the Northern Tennis League without any points. At TTK Sachsenwald there was a clear 0:6. “In the end, it was well deserved because the opponents were stronger across the board. “Everything has to be right for us and not on the other hand, so that we can make this league game more balanced as a team,” admitted FTSV captain Thorben Gruner without envy.
In the top singles, Tobias Killer met Ulrich Tippenhauer. While he had been able to win at least a few games against him a year ago, Killer was just as lost in his 0:6, 2:6 as Gruner was in his two-set defeat. “Tobias and I simply didn’t find any weapons with which we could have endangered our opponents. They had an answer for everything,” explained Gruner.
The matches in positions three and four were more evenly balanced. Björn Linke faced a powerful opponent who barely allowed a break chance throughout the match. And since Linke was always under pressure in his own service games and had given up his serve once in both sets, the score was 4:6, 4:6. The point of honor in Jan-Dirk Wittrock’s duel was within reach: Brinkum’s number four was already leading 5-2 in the first round, but was unable to use four set points in the further course. After losing the first set (6:7), the match was over.
The first doubles match, in which Killer and Wittrock competed for the FTSV, also developed into a quick affair. In the second doubles, Christian Schult moved to Gruner’s side. “We played sensibly here. Nevertheless, our opponents were superior. For us, they were good sessions to help us get more used to the hall,” concluded Gruner.
