Sixty years after its construction, the sports hall in Piazza Spedini will undergo redevelopment work.
The structure will be energetically sustainable and adapt the safety of the facility to the emerging sporting needs. This was established by the municipal council of the mayor Enrico Trantino who, on the proposal of the councilor for community policies and sport Sergio Parisi, approved the technical-economic feasibility project of the restyling interventions of the historic structure, with an estimated cost of 1, 7 million euros. “A fact of extraordinary importance for the sporting world of Catania – explained councilor Parisi – also for the symbolic value of the building adjacent to the stadium, a facility that hosted the Paoletti and Alidea championships and generations of athletes from many sports clubs. The idea that we had with Mayor Trantino to do these works in the Palaspedini actually dates back to a year ago, but now thanks to the national Sport and Suburbs tender and the programming of community funds for 2021-2027 – Parisi specified – we are capable of guaranteeing that the redevelopment work on the glorious sports facility will be carried out by next year, which, apart from limited interventions, has never had the necessary extraordinary maintenance of the entire structure over the years”.
In detail, according to the project approved by the municipal council, the works will consist of the replacement of all the fixtures, the elimination of the false ceiling, the replacement of the air conditioning and heating systems including the installation of a heating system and of the internal lighting and of the outdoor pitch. For the purposes of safe use of the premises of the arena, a series of sanding interventions on the playing field is also envisaged; the redevelopment of the changing rooms and stands capable of hosting 800 spectators.
In this way the facility will guarantee a broad sporting multidisciplinarity, allowing the practice of numerous disciplines such as Volleyball, Basketball, Table Tennis, Judo, Wrestling, Karate, Gymnastics, Boxing, Badminton and even Paralympic competitions.
