Rúben Amorim is the new manager of Manchester United. The 39-year-old Portuguese succeeds Erik ten Hag, who was dismissed on Monday. He will start his new job on November 11 and will sign until the summer of 2027.
Amorim has been at the helm of Sporting CP since 2020. The Portuguese club reports that it will receive 11 million euros as a buyout payment for the trainer.
Ten Hag was dismissed from Manchester United on Monday due to poor results. The English top club is in fourteenth place in the Premier League after nine games.
Temporary Van Nistelrooij
After Ten Hag’s dismissal, United first appointed assistant Ruud van Nistelrooij as interim manager for the League Cup match against Leicester City (5-2 win).
He will be on the bench as United’s head coach for the next three games. A home match against Chelsea is scheduled for Sunday. The Greek PAOK will come to Old Trafford on Thursday as part of the Europa League and on Sunday, November 10, United will play at home again, against Leicester City in the Premier League.
It is still unclear whether Van Nistelrooij will be allowed to remain as an assistant under Amorim. The same applies to Dutch assistant René Hake and goalkeeping coach Jelle ten Rouwelaar.

Amorim, former Benfica player and former coach of Braga, is known in Portugal as a coach who enjoys working with young talents on their development. Since his appointment at Sporting in 2020, he has managed to become champion twice with the club from Lisbon.
The championship in 2020/2021 was the first national title since 2002. The trainer also won the country’s second cup tournament twice with Sporting.
Impressive season
This season, Sporting was undefeated under Amorim. All nine games in the competition were won convincingly. The goal difference is impressive: 30 for and 2 against.
The Portuguese are also doing well in the Champions League. They won against LOSC Lille and Sturm Graz, and they drew 1-1 away at PSV.
At 39 years old, Amorim is United’s youngest manager in 33 years. “Rúben is one of the most promising and highly regarded young managers in Europe,” the English club said in a statement.
