Friday is proving to be a day to forget for Sporting. This is because, moments after seeing Rúben Amorim leave for Manchester United, he was defeated in the long-awaited junior classic, against Benfica, 3-1.
The lions were even the best team that entered the late match of the second round of the under-19 national championship, played at the Seixal complex, as a result of a well-aimed shot from Frederico Gomes. However, Jair Monteiro scored twice before the half-time whistle and completed the ‘somersault’.
In the second half, the team coached by Filipe Neto had plenty of opportunities to restore equality, but faltered in front of the goal… unlike Francisco Silva, who, in the 76th minute, delivered the ‘final blow’.
After all, with this triumph, Benfica now has 26 points, which leaves them in isolated leadership, with a six point advantage over second place, Académico de Viseu, who have one game in hand. Sporting, on the other hand, lives in fourth place, with 17 points.
