The goal that RC Celta scored in the first half of the match against Betis is involved in controversy. The team led by Claudio Giráldez took the lead on the Villamarín score in the 13th minute thanks to the volley scored by Javi Rodríguez, but perhaps they should not have gotten on the scoreboard and that was reviewed from the VOR room by Pizarro Gómez.

At first, Betis complained about the foul that started everything. Sabaly fought for the ball with Iago Aspas close to the goal line and, after a struggle in which the Celtic captain was able to push the green-and-white full-back, he touched the ball with his hand. Ortiz Arias, field referee, declared the infraction. The foul was taken and after Diego Llorente’s clearance, Javi Rodríguez impaled the ball inside the area and beat Rui Silva.

The replays of the play showed that Starfelt was ahead but it was also seen that he was ahead of Rui Silva, with Llorente himself as the last Betis defender, a position that blocked the vision of Betis’s Portuguese goalkeeper.

Celta celebrated the goal and the ball was taken to the central circle while the VAR drew the lines and analyzed Starfelt’s position. Fornals, as captain, and Johnny Cardoso spoke with Ortiz Arias, until the main referee indicated that the goal definitely went up on the scoreboard and put the momentary 0-1 on the scoreboard.
