The 15th edition of the Suriname International Badminton Tournament has been successfully concluded. The tournament took place from November 13 to 17 at the Ring Sport Center and brought together 72 players from 12 countries, who competed for titles in five categories. Suriname was represented by a team of 32 players and won an impressive seven medals.
ODespite a power outage that prevented the official opening ceremony on Thursday, the players remained determined. In the quarterfinals, Suriname’s seven-time national champion Sören Opti lost to Samuel Cassar from Malta, with a score of 21-16 and 21-18. The tournament featured plenty of spectacular moments, including Adriano Viale of Peru’s surprise victory over the highest-ranked player, Kevin Cordón of Guatemala, in the semifinals. Viale won convincingly 21-9 and 21-19.
During the finals, top athletes competed for the titles. Misha Zilberman from Israel became champion in the Men’s Singles after beating crowd favorite Adriano Viale. In the Women’s Singles, Inés Lucía Castillo from Peru triumphed, who also won the Women’s Doubles together with Namie Miyahira.
For Suriname the Men’s Doubles was the icing on the cake. Sören Opti and Mitchel Wongsodikromo defeated their compatriots Rivano Bisphan and Danny Chen. In the Mixed Doubles final, Rivano Bisphan and Sion Zeegelaar kept it exciting, but ultimately lost to Christopher Salvador and Diana Soto from Guatemala.
Chairman of the Surinamese Badminton Association (SuBaBo), Dino Kappel, expressed his satisfaction with the course of the tournament:
*”It’s great to see how players and audiences came together to make this 15th edition a success. This tournament is also a tribute to my mother, former chairman Rinia Haynes, who opened the first edition in 1999.”*
The Suriname International Badminton Tournament remains an important platform for the development of badminton in the region and a source of inspiration for the Surinamese sports community. The next edition, the XVI Suriname International 2025, has already been registered with the Badminton World Federation.
