Last Sunday the Cantonal Squad Cup in the U15 age category was held in Vernier GE. Twelve cantonal squad teams took part, including the cantonal squad from Eastern Switzerland.
JC Buchs nominated Silvan Tischhauser, Gustav Kern and Luca Wüst for the Eastern Switzerland team. The three judo fighters have been members of the Eastern Switzerland cantonal squad since spring 2024. With good performances at national and international tournaments, all three were able to recommend themselves for selection in a short time.
Evenly matched fights narrowly lost in the final
At the start of the tournament, the team from Eastern Switzerland met the team from Basel. The Eastern Swiss team didn’t miss a beat and won confidently with 5:2 victory points.
As the tournament continued, the Eastern Swiss team came across Team Neuchâtel – a first big test. However, the Eastern Switzerland team was also able to prevail surprisingly clearly in this encounter and once again won clearly and deservedly, with 5:2 victory points.
The group victory and thus also the direct semi-final entry for the Eastern Swiss team were perfect. Now it was time to take to the mats against one of the tournament favorites, Team Aargau. It was now time to regroup all existing forces and make an effort to secure a place in the finals.
Not an easy task, because after three fights they were already 0:3 behind. However, the Eastern Swiss team with the Buchs trio in the team achieved incredible things as the fight progressed: they turned the clear deficit into a 4-3 victory and thus secured one of the final places.
In the final match against Team Zurich it was all about everything again and about the coveted gold trophy for the Cantonal Squad Cup winner. The Eastern Switzerland team initially managed to win, but then fell behind. Unfortunately, two particularly even fights were narrowly lost during the rest of the competition. The final result, with 5:2 victory points in favor of the Zurich team, does not adequately reflect the course of the fairly balanced affair between the two teams.
Contributed to the brilliant result
Silvan Tischhauser, Gustav Kern and Luca Wüst – who otherwise fight in the service of the Buchs judo club – were able to provide extremely valuable services to the Eastern Switzerland team on the way to the runner-up title. With courageous commitment and strong fights, they were able to make a decisive contribution to the brilliant result of the Eastern Swiss team.
The judo team from eastern Switzerland can rightly be proud of their strong performances, as they managed to break into the phalanx of the strong teams from western Switzerland and thus secure the runner-up title in Geneva.
