After seeing her compatriot Rebecca Marino fall 6-0 and 7-5 to the 2021 US Open champion, Emma Raducanu, Quebecer Leylah Fernandez made multiple mistakes to lose 6-2 and 6-4 against Katie Boulter, 24th player in the world. Thus, the maple leaf team will not be able to repeat its exploits of last year when it won the competition. The United Kingdom will face Slovakia in the next round.
Fernandez, 31st on the WTA circuit, made a few double faults to allow her rival to gain the upper hand.
As for Marino, her 38 unforced errors clearly illustrate her difficulties facing the holder of 58th place in the ranking.
The other members of the Canadian delegation were Marina Stakusic and doubles specialist Gabriela Dabrowski.
TVA Sports will broadcast the semi-final between Italy and Poland on Monday at 11 a.m.

Champion in 2023, Canada will have a lot to do to reach the final four. Rebecca Marino and Marina Stakusic, as well as doubles specialist Gabriela Dabrowski, will have to take over in the absence of Bianca Andreescu. Among her rivals, Katie Boulter ranks 24th in the world, compared to 31st for Fernandez. The Union Jack representatives can also bet on Emma Raducanu (58th), 2021 US Open champion, and Harriet Dart (88th).
A victory on Sunday would allow Canada to face Slovakia in the final four.
