Tennis – Groups drawn: Zverev meets Alcaraz – Sport at the ATP Finals

Turin (dpa) – Germany’s best tennis professional Alexander Zverev is already meeting Wimbledon and French Open winner Carlos Alcaraz in the preliminary round of the ATP Finals. In addition to the Spaniard, Zverev’s other group opponents are Norwegian Casper Ruud and Andrej Rublyov from Russia. This resulted in the draw for the end of the season for the eight best tennis professionals of the year, which begins on Sunday in Turin. Zverev enters the tournament on Monday and will first face Rublev in the evening match (8.30 p.m./Sky).

As second in the world rankings, the Hamburg native leads his group. The 27-year-old is initially avoiding an early duel with Jannik Sinner, the Italian number one in the world. Zverev could also only meet the American Taylor Fritz, against whom he lost at Wimbledon and at the US Open, in the semi-finals at the earliest.

In the other group, Russian professional Daniil Medvedev and Australian Alex de Minaur are also fighting for a place in the semi-finals. The Serbian record Grand Slam tournament winner Novak Djokovic canceled his participation.

Zverev in brilliant form

The top two in each group advance to the semi-finals. The final will take place on November 17th. Zverev has already won the prestigious title twice at the season finale. In 2021 he triumphed like he did in 2018.

This time he is competing despite his long-term lung problems. He was in strong form when he won the Masters 1000 event in Paris last Sunday.

In addition to the singles competition, the doubles season finale will also be held in Turin with the top German duo Tim Pütz and Kevin Krawietz. In their start of the group games on Monday (11.30 a.m./Sky), the two will face Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic, who are ranked first. The other opponents in the preliminary round are Simone Bolelli/Andrea Vavassori and Rohan Bopanna/Matthew Ebden.
