Germany’s best tennis professional Alexander Zverev will meet Spanish Wimbledon and French Open winner Carlos Alcaraz in the group phase of the ATP Finals. This resulted in the draw for the end of the season for the eight best tennis professionals of the year, which begins on Sunday in Turin. The other opponents of the world number two from Hamburg are Casper Ruud from Norway and Andrej Rublew from Russia. Zverev enters the tournament on Monday and will first face Rublev in the evening match (8:30 p.m.).
This means that Zverev is initially avoiding an early duel with the Italian world number one Jannik Sinner. The German could also only meet the American Taylor Fritz, against whom Zverev lost at Wimbledon and at the US Open, in the semi-finals at the earliest. Zverev is traveling to Paris with the tailwind of his recent triumph at the Masters.

What is the significance of the tournament?

The ATP Finals are considered the unofficial tennis world championship at the tour’s final tournament of the year. From November 10th to 17th, the eight best players of the season will fight for what is probably the most important title outside of the four Grand Slam tournaments at the Pala Alpitour in Turin.

There is also a lot of prize money to be won. The individual winner will receive up to $4.8 million.

What is the mode?

Unlike all other important tournaments on the tour, a group phase will first be played, as is known from major football events.

The best two in each of the two groups of four qualify for the semi-finals. The next day, the big final takes place in front of 20,000 spectators on the hard court in Turin, which is hosting the finals for the fourth time in a row.

Who plays in which group?

Alexander Zverev is set as group leader. He will face French Open and Wimbledon winner Carlos Alcaraz as well as the Norwegian Casper Ruud and the Russian Andrej Rublew.

Jannik Sinner leads the second group with Rublew’s compatriot Daniil Medvedev, Taylor Fritz (USA) and debutant Alex de Minaur from Australia. Defending champion Novak Djokovic from Serbia canceled his participation due to a “persistent injury”.

What are Zverev’s chances?

After his triumph at the Masters in Paris, Zverev is traveling with plenty of tailwind, even if he rarely looked good against the absolute top players this year. Nevertheless: Despite health setbacks, no player on the tour has won more games this year than Zverev. The 27-year-old loves the tournament and was crowned unofficial world champion at the finals in 2018 and 2021.

And in doubles?

The German Davis Cup duo Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz want to have a say in the title. The US Open finalists are together at the end of the season for the first time and were in good shape in the fall – but a calf injury recently slowed Pütz down.

What about the tennis women?

The tennis players also compete in the WTA finals every year. This year the tournament, which has the same status as the men’s event, will take place from November 2nd to 9th in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia). German players are not there.
