RIYADH (Reuters) – The final round of the women’s tennis tour season, the WTA Finals, was held on the 7th in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with defending champion Iga Świętek of Poland failing to make the final four.
Swiontek played against Russian Daria Kasatkina and won 2-0. The match was decided in just 51 minutes, the shortest WTA Finals match in the last eight years.
In the other match on the same day, Cori Gauff (USA), who had already qualified for the semifinals, needed to beat Barbora Krejcikova (Czech Republic) in the other match of the day to advance, but Gauff defeated Krejcikova 5-7, 4-6. Świętek lost in straight sets and was eliminated.
Krejcikova is ranked 13th in the world, the lowest ranking for a player who advanced to the semifinals of the tournament since Sandrine Testu (France, then world No. 14) in 2001. “It was a big win, I’m really happy with how I played, it was a very good match,” Krejcikova said.
