RIYADH (Reuters) – The final round of the women’s tennis tour this season, the WTA Finals, took place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on the 8th in the semi-finals, where third seed Cori Gauff (USA) defeated world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka (2019). (from Belarus) and advanced to the final.
The match between the two players, who had a record of 4 wins and 4 losses so far, was an even match, with both players breaking each other from the beginning, leading to a tie-break, with Gauff taking the first set 7-6. Gauff led 4-1 in the second set, and although there was a break battle after that, Gauff prevailed 6-3 and won in straight sets.
Gauff, who stopped Sabalenka from winning her first tournament, said, “I’m happy with my play. There’s a reason why she’s No. 1 in the world.” Looking ahead to his first final, he said, “Honestly, I’m not too nervous. The final match is like a bonus for me, and I think being here is itself a reward for my achievements this season.”
In the other match, Zheng Qinwen (China), seeded seventh and appearing in the tournament for the first time, defeated Barbora Krejcikova (Czech Republic) 6-3, 7-5. “It’s a special feeling. It’s my first time competing and I’ve reached the final. She (Krejcikova) is a really great player. It was a good match,” she said of her feelings.
