Turin – Italy’s tennis star Jannik Sinner crowned his outstanding year with the premiere title at the season finale. Celebrated by the audience and with a strong performance, the world number one won the final of the ATP Finals in Turin 6:4, 6:4 against the American Taylor Fritz.
After 1:24 hours, Sinner converted the first match point in the new edition of the US Open final. As the undefeated champion of the ATP Finals in the group phase, the local hero secured prize money of 4.88 million US dollars.
“It’s unbelievable. It’s a great week. It’s the first title for me in Italy. It means so much to me,” said Sinner, who was the first Italian to win the end of the season.
Spectators create a party atmosphere
“Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole, Sinneeeer, Sinneeeer” echoed again and again through the sold-out hall with 13,000 spectators. The final against Alexander Zverev’s semi-final conqueror was competitive. But the 23-year-old earned victory with clarity and brilliant serves.
The world number one got a break in every set and made his opponent despair with his service. The fact that he remained without losing a set in five games against top ten players underlines his dominance.
Sinner and Fritz also faced each other in the group phase of the year-end tournament of the eight most successful tennis players of the season. Sinner also won the encounter, as well as the final of the US Open in September. The South Tyrolean not only won the title in New York this year, but also at the Australian Open. In June he rose to number one in the world for the first time.
Last year, Sinner missed out on the title at the ATP Finals against record Grand Slam tournament winner Novak Djokovic. The Serbian defending champion was qualified for the ATP Finals this time too, but decided not to take part due to an unspecified injury.
A decision on the ban is pending
Sinner also caused a stir this season with a doping affair. Despite an acquittal after two positive doping tests, he still faces a ban. The World Anti-Doping Agency Wada recently appealed the case to the International Court of Arbitration for Sports in Lausanne.
