Alexander Zverev had to admit defeat in three sets against Taylor Fritz (USA) in the semifinals of the ATP Finals. A German duo, however, is in the final.16.11.2024 | 0:46 min

Completely disappointed, Alexander Zverev tears his hairband off his head and trots dejectedly out of the Inalpi Arena: The dream of a third title at the ATP Finals has shattered dramatically for Germany’s number one. The Hamburg native was once again defeated by his feared opponent Taylor Fritz from the USA in a tennis thriller and missed the final in Turin.

Zverev: Disappointment at the end of the season

For Zverev, the season ends in great disappointment after the 3:6, 6:3, 6:7 (3:7). The Olympic champion in Tokyo was in impressive late form during the tournament and underlined his title ambitions several times. Unlike the furious two-set win against Spain’s top star Carlos Alcaraz on Friday, the 27-year-old only came close to his top level at times against Fritz.

Zverev ends the 2024 season with a personal record of 69 wins, but without the Grand Slam title he longed for. The 27-year-old wanted to gain momentum in Turin for the title hunt next year; the Australian Open in Melbourne is coming up in less than two months. But against Fritz he showed nerves once again in a big game.

Sinner or Ruud is waiting for Fritz

Fritz will face the Italian tournament favorite Jannik Sinner or Casper Ruud from Norway in the final on Sunday (6 p.m.). Zverev, on the other hand, is already going on vacation – he is skipping the Davis Cup in Malaga for reasons of regeneration, and on Tuesday he is flying to the Maldives. After all, he ended the year second in the world rankings.

For Zverev it was the seventh defeat against Fritz in the twelfth meeting, and the fourth in a row. The American had already thrown the Hamburger out of the tournament at Wimbledon and the US Open this year. The American also presented himself in a good mood on Saturday. Zverev received his first break of this tournament when the score was 2:3, and a little later set one was lost.

World class tennis in the third set

Zverev struggled towards his box, but improved significantly at the start of the second round – and managed the quick break to make it 3-1. He then fended off a breakball from Fritz and forced the deciding set. There the two opponents fought some very long rallies at world-class level, the tiebreak had to decide – and in this one Fritz showed the better nerves.
