On the weekend of November 9th and 10th, 2024, the best players from the canton will gather in the Schützenmatt gym in Burgdorf for the 2024 Bern Badminton Championships. This year the tournament also recorded a new record number of participants. With 212 players, last year’s record of 206 participants was broken.
Strong juniors prevailed
Not only experienced cracks fought for the Bernese championship title, but also aspiring and ambitious young people. This year, Malena Maurer and Jael Stucki (U17 / U15) demonstrated their skills in an impressive way. After last year’s fourth place in the women’s doubles strength class 1 category, Malena Maurer and Jael Stucki from BC Uni Bern prevailed this year and secured the deserved victory in this category. In a competitive match against the top cracks Nadia Fankhauser and Michelle Schär (BC Olympica-Brig / individual member Swiss Badminton) they won in three sets with 14:21, 21:16 and 21:14.
Double victory for Burgdorf-Jegenstorf
In the men’s doubles class 2, two teams from BC Burgdorf-Jegenstorf dueled in the final: René Hungerbühler and Christof Lüthi played against Marius Hächler and Amon Noth. In a balanced game, the Hungerbühler-Lüthi duo were ultimately crowned Bernese champions. They won the thrilling game 22:20 and 21:17. In the women’s doubles class 2, BC Burgdorf-Jegenstorf even managed a triple victory – at least almost, because BC Burgdorf-Jegenstorf was represented in every team. Sibylle Bürki and Agnes Heiniger, both from BC Burgdorf-Jegenstorf, were the winners of this category and were able to defend their title. In the final they played an exciting game against Rahel Spörri from BC Burgdorf-Jegenstorf and Saskia Strunze from BC Thun and won 21:15 and 22:20. Rebecca Brachat and Michelle Wälchli, both from BC Burgdorf-Jegenstorf, won third place. They prevailed against Aurore Gaillard (BC Uni Bern) and Emma Grande (BC Schüpfen).
When the young push out the “old”.
But it wasn’t just in women’s doubles that there was a generational change in Category 1. Valentin Berra, who was a sensational winner in all disciplines at the Bern Championships a year ago, also played this year, but due to the young competition, he was no longer quite as strong as last year. So he was able to confidently invest a little more time in his second engagement in badminton: together with Nicola Schneiter he was there for the first time as the “StringBros”. The two were available to those present with their professional expertise and also offered a racket stringing service and all sorts of self-created badminton products.
