The Cabildo of La Palma, through the Sports Area, directed by Councilor Yurguen Hernández, and with the collaboration of the Canarian Basketball Federation, will launch a new island league in the 3×3 basketball modality in the next sports season. in which teams made up of three players will compete. This competition will be aimed at the minibasketball and lower categories, with the aim of encouraging boys and girls to start the sport from an early age. In addition, the league will be fully compatible with island competitions of the same categories in the usual 5×5 modality.
The president of the Cabildo, Sergio Rodríguez, emphasizes that La Palma is an island with a great tradition in basketball, and this project’s main objective is to recover the practice of this sport on the street. In this sense, Rodríguez highlights that the creation of the 3×3 league for the youngest not only seeks to promote physical activity, but also to instill the sporting values that define basketball.
This new initiative is part of an analysis of the sports situation on the Island, where a decrease in the practice of basketball has been identified in recent years.
For his part, Yurguen Hernández highlights that, to make the development of this league possible, the Cabildo has acquired a specific court for 3×3 matches. The installation will be located in key locations in various municipalities on the Island, with the aim of bringing basketball to every corner of La Palma, recovering the atmosphere of the street game that has characterized this sport.
The Cabildo is studying the possibility of implementing this format in other sports competitions, with the intention of “promoting and taking La Palma sports to another level,” according to Hernández.
This weekend, the 3×3 league will start in El Paso, in the parking lots of the municipal pavilion, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., marking the beginning of a project that seeks to bring basketball closer to the youngest and revitalize the sporting tradition. of the Island.
