The GM/Cadillac team is arriving in Formula 1. The organizers spoke this Monday “an agreement on this principle” with the American automobile giant General Motors.
The Formula 1 championship will welcome an eleventh team on its starting grid in 2026, the GM/Cadillac team, the organizers announced on Monday, referring to “an agreement on this principle” with the American automobile giant.
GM’s application was validated by “an agreement in principle” concluded at the end of a long process of exchanges between the two parties which made it possible to note “the viability of participation following the commercial assessment and decision taken by Formula 1 in January 2024”specifies a Formula 1 press release. “During this year, they achieved operational milestones and clearly expressed their commitment to name the eleventh team after GM/Cadillac”underlines F1.
In addition to the arrival of the American automobile giant in the premier competition of motor sports, F1 is also considering “bring GM in as an engine supplier at a later date”.

The American manufacturer announced last year that it had registered with the International Automobile Federation (FIA) to be an engine supplier in Formula 1 from 2028, offering support to the candidacy of Michael Andretti, son of the champion of the world of F1 1978 Mario Andretti (84 years old), to join the championship. The Italian-American octogenarian will serve on the team’s board of directors, she said.

In January 2023, the FIA launched a process allowing potential new participants to join the championship from 2025 or 2026. “General Motors is a major global brand and powerhouse in the OEM world, and it works with some impressive partners”estimated FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, also quoted in the press release.
