The Saint-Adolphe-d’Howard skatepark becomes reality

After several years of work and community mobilization, the Saint-Adolphe-d’Howard skatepark project is coming to life. Construction began on November 14 with excavation of the land, while steel structures and concreting will follow in spring 2025. Located behind the Au-Cœur-de-la-Nature school, this skateboard park , with an area of 4,200 square feet, represents an investment of approximately $240,000.

Since 2022, young people in the municipality have been deprived of a space to practice their favorite sport, the wooden modules of the old ice rink having been deemed unsafe. “In Saint-Adolphe-d’Howard, there are no sports parks for teenagers. We don’t have a soccer field, baseball field or volleyball field. This skatepark will really be for the Adolphine youth,” explains Nicole Tétreault, director of the Maison des Jeunes Loco Local.

A response to a need

Ms. Tétreault returns to the origins of the project: “We went every week to skateparks in neighboring municipalities with the minibus from the Maison des Jeunes, and the young people loved it. This is where the idea took shape, responding to a concrete need of young people. »

A unifying and inclusive project

Beyond a space for skateboarders, this skatepark aims to be a gathering place for the entire community. The involvement of young people and their families in landscaping will help to strengthen their sense of belonging, ensuring greater respect for the place.

In addition, the park will offer workshops supervised by professionals to introduce young people from the age of eight to the safe and technical practice of skateboarding. “It was really what brought all the young people together, at the Youth Center, to skate. That’s why we started doing training with a company called Technical Skateboard,” explains Ms. Tétreault. “The objective is to offer a sporting activity where young and old can come together. It’s not just for young people, it’s for the entire community,” underlines Ms. Tétreault.

A community project
The project, carried out under the governance of Ressources Communautaires Saint-Adolphe and the Maison des Jeunes Loco Local, was entrusted to Papillon Skateboards inc. via a public call for tenders. It was created thanks to the hard work of Ms. Tétreault and Ms. Monique Desrochers, coordinator of Ressources Communautaires Saint-Adolphe.

“This skatepark is much more than a sports space, it is a place where young people can break their isolation, develop healthy lifestyle habits and enjoy a safe space. There will be a park, then it will be their park,” concludes Ms. Tétreault.
