For a long time, things were quiet around Juan Martin del Potro. Now the 2009 US Open winner has spoken out on social media – and talked about his seemingly endless period of suffering. “My daily life is not as I would like it to be,” the Argentine gave insights into his life, which has resembled a nightmare for several years.
In total, del Potro had to undergo eight operations on his knee, but almost three years after his career ended in February 2022, he still struggles with pain every day. “Every day when I wake up I have to take six or seven tablets,” explained the 36-year-old.
Since he broke his kneecap in June 2019, life has been different for del Potro: “I haven’t been able to walk since I was 31. I can no longer climb stairs, kick a ball and have never played tennis again.” He is still looking for a solution – so far without success.

According to the former world number three, some doctors suggested that he wear a prosthesis. On the other hand, he also heard that it was still too early for this measure. “I hope that one day this will end. Because I want to live a life without pain.”
On Sunday, del Potro will say goodbye to Argentine tennis fans once again at an exhibition against Novak Djokovic in Buenos Aires. His wish is clear: “If I can be on the tennis court in peace and happiness for at least one, two or three hours, that would be nice.”
