The world number one achieves a feat that no one has achieved in tennis since Roger Federer’s mark in 2005

The Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner, current number one in the ATP ranking, established himself on Sunday along with his country’s delegation as two-time champion of the Davis Cup, the most important tournament at the national level in world tennis.

The consecration of Italy in that tournament was the last great joy for Sinner in 2024, a year that he will surely consider as the best so far in his entire brilliant sporting career.

In the midst of so much happiness, it was also confirmed that the Italian equaled an amazing mark that no one, including the Spanish Rafael Nadal and the Serbian Novak Djokovic, had been able to achieve since the Swiss Roger Federer did it in 2005.

Sinner, like Federer did 19 years ago, won at least one set in every match he played during the year. The Italian’s statistics are colossal because in 2024 he played 79 games among which he achieved 73 victories and only lost six times.

A curious fact amid Sinner’s overwhelming statistics is that three of the defeats he accumulated in the year were against the same tennis player: the Spanish Carlos Alcaraz.

The other three defeats came in entertaining matches played throughout the season against the Greek Stéfanos Tsitsipas and the Russians Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev.

In all these matches, in which he failed to win, the Italian won at least one set, which means that they were not, by any means, easy victories for his rivals on the various courts around the world.

Sinner’s sensational year includes winning his first two Grand Slam tournaments: The Italian won the Australian Open, after beating Medvedev in the final, and the US Open in which he won the title game against the American Taylor Fritz.

The Italian, in 2024, also won the ATP Finals, formerly known as the Masters Tournament, which brings together the eight best of the season.

To the list must also be added the titles that Sinner achieved in their order at the ATP 500 in Rotterdam, the Masters 1,000 in Miami, the ATP 500 in Halle, the Masters 1,000 in Cincinnati and the Masters 1,000 in Shanghai.
