As expected, Union Lüdinghausen lost out in the duel with Fun-Ball Dortelweil, the reigning champions prevailed 5-2 in the Drei-Burgen-Arena on Sunday. Michael Schnaase, however, had no trace of disappointment as the hosts had already exceeded their target with a 6-1 win over SG Schorndorf the day before.
“The hall was full and the spectators got to see some great matches,” said the 08 team manager. For example, the top singles between Julien Carraggi and the Frenchman Yanis Gaudin, which the Belgian, who recently seemed slightly outplayed, won 3-1 after losing the first round.
Piek successful twice
Selena Piek achieved the same thing – first in doubles with Lara Käpplein, then alongside Ties van der Lecq in mixed doubles. A little shock in advance: The Dutchwoman’s thugs only arrived late on Saturday night from Denmark, where Piek had last been on duty.
Lüdinghausen did not disappoint on Sunday afternoon either. Quite the opposite. Because Carraggi and Piek, both slightly injured, were rested in game two, the hosts came out of the affair more than respectably: Highlights this time: how Aram Mahmoud brought German number one Matthias Kicklitz to his knees in five sets. And the thrilling mixed doubles, which the 08 pairing van der Lecq/Käpplein won, also 3-2, against Lasse Molhede and Julie Macpherson.
In the second singles between Christopher Klauer and U22 champion Kian-Yu Oei (1:3), the Lüdinghauser was “only missing little things. In a year or two I will have the routine to compete at this level and win games like this.”
