The Kodokan Cup, which took place last weekend without Naohisa Takato or Joshiro Maruyama – both injured – allowed the new Japanese performance committee, now headed by Toshihiko Yamada (formerly Tokai), to deliver the selection which will participate in the Tokyo Grand Slam on December 7 and 8. A Japanese team without its stars: none of those selected in Paris, including the Olympic champion in -48kg Natsumi Tsunoda, nor Uta Abe, will be present. Among the men, Hifumi Abe and Takanori Nagase, the two reigning double Olympic champions, will also be absent. On the other hand, three Olympic medalists will return: Ryuju Nagayama (bronze in -60kg), Soichi Hashimoto (bronze in -73kg) and Sanshiro Murao (silver in -90kg).
