Almost a year after the judicial liquidation of Holophane, it is Europhane’s turn to bring down the curtain, leaving 85 employees in the lurch.

An announcement which surprised more than one and which will not be without repercussions on the economic fabric of Andelys (Eure).

Empathy and concerns

Traders agreed to express their resentment following this announcement. Everyone feels empathy but does not hide their concern about their future.

“We feel sorry for them. It’s hard to hear news like that. Some will manage to bounce back quickly but it will be more complicated for others,” reacts the owner of the La Civette bar.

Corinne Daupleyone of the two managers of the Forum Beauté Bio Hair salon, agrees:

“My husband worked for almost 40 years for Holophane. When it closed he was 60 years old and was able to retire but imagine those who are not yet at that stage. All the customers talk about it and worry. The climate is not very happy. »

“My former colleagues are incomprehensible”

Beatrice Rousselle herself worked at Europhane for 34 years on the production line concerned before leaving the company and opening her haberdashery store, Aux Boutons d’Or, rue Marcel-Lefèvre.

“When I heard the news, I was saddened by my former colleagues. For those with whom I have kept in touch, they are completely incomprehensible because they said there was work. »

And for the couples who worked there it’s a double blow.

A poorly chosen period

The announcement of the closure comes almost two months before the end-of-year holiday period and the layoffs should be effective at the start of 2025.

“They could have waited until after the holidays to announce the news to employees, the period is poorly chosen,” argues Béatrice Rousselle.

“It is incorrect and disrespectful to do this now. The decision to lay off employees did not go back to yesterday, they could have waited,” says the manager of La Civette.

The fear of a dead city

Audric Demaret, head of the Hôtel de Ville brasserie, testified about the closure of Europhane.

Europhane employees contributed to the economic and social life of the town of Andelys. Traders fear its desertification. “Holophane, now Europhane, it’s almost the end of the industry in Andelys”, book Françoise Milinairemanager of the Pro&Cie store.

Pour Audric Demaretchef at the Hôtel de Ville brasserie, there is a great risk of losing part of the clientele.

“Some Europhane employees came to eat here. I’m sure I’m going to lose customers. I sympathize and recognize the brutality of the announcement but we must think about the future, find companies that want to establish themselves in the region. The city must be revitalized quickly. »

Françoise Milinaire is also thinking about the future. “My fear is that the city will become a dormitory town. »
