Tragic Lightning Strike Claims Life of Football Player, Leaves Teammates Hospitalized: A Shocking Incident in Sports Safety

A soccer match in Peru, where 39-year-old soccer player José Hugo de la Cruz Meza died after being struck by lightning, offered a lot of drastic footage. Other footballers ended up in hospital with burns, including two teenagers aged fourteen and sixteen.

Ugly and disturbing footage of football players leaving the pitch can be seen being struck by lightning. Thirty-nine-year-old José Hugo de la Cruz Meza was dead at the scene, AP agency states that he was killed because of a metal bracelet on his hand.

Goalkeeper Juan Chocca Llacta, a year older, also took a direct hit. He is in the hospital with serious burns. According to the website Daily Mail two minors (14 and 16 years old) were also taken to the hospital, but their condition is expected to be stabilized.

The sad incident took place during a match between Juventud Bellavista and Familia Chocca in the region of Huancaya, which lies at an altitude of 3,554 meters. Lightning strikes in this area are said to be nothing unusual.
