One of the key talking points in the coming months will be whether NFL teams will value him as a corner or a receiver. But in any case, he won’t have to wait long to hear his name called on draft night.
One of coach Deion Sanders’ top recruits during his time at Jackson State, Hunter made history as the first five-star recruit to commit to an FCS school. The nation’s top prospect only played in eight games during his only season at Jackson State, but he showed significant potential for both teams. He followed Sanders to Colorado last offseason, and in 2023 Hunter recorded five offensive touchdowns while adding three interceptions.
That success earned him first-team All-American selection and the Paul Hornung Award (given to the most versatile college player in the country). Hunter enters 2024 with high expectations, and so far he has delivered a 74-911-9 stat line as a receiver (to go along with one rushing touchdown). He matched last year’s interception total on defense while adding eight pass deflections. Hunter, who averaged nearly 115 total snaps per game last year, remains a mainstay on both offense and defense in 2024.
It will be interesting to see if teams at the top of their draft boards consider Hunter. A corner, receiver or player who can handle roles on offense and defense. Only one defensive back in NFL history has been selected first overall (Gary Glick in 1956), and four receivers have received that honor (the most recent being Keyshawn Johnson in 1994).
