Not only Jannik Sinner’s triumph at the ATP Finals on Sunday caused great celebration, but also the announcement that the most important tennis tournament in the world will remain in Italy for five more years after the four Grand Slams.

The original contract between the ATP and the Italian tennis association FITP was designed for five years, i.e. from 2021 to 2025. In recent years there have been many indications that Saudi Arabia would be awarded the contract for the upcoming editions. As ATP boss Andrea Gaudenzi announced on Sunday in Turin, Italy has received preference over the lucrative offer from the desert state.

It is not yet known where exactly the tournament will take place from 2026. As was revealed in Turin, Milan is a hot candidate. The PalaItalia, built for the Olympic Games, could serve as the venue.

Sinner as a driving force

The ATP Finals in Italy have had an outstanding success so far, writes the ATP. “This year the event attracted a record audience of more than 183,000 spectators, with 15 of the 15 sessions sold out over the 8 days. Prize money in 2024 reached $15.25 million – a tournament record,” according to a press release. The main reason for this success is undoubtedly Jannik Sinner, who has triggered a veritable tennis boom in Italy. Italian fans from all over the country made a pilgrimage to Turin to see the South Tyrolean live.

“Over the last four years, Italy has proven to be an incredible host of our most prestigious event,” says Gaudenzi. “We look forward to continuing to raise the bar together.” Angelo Bingahi, President of FITP, said: “Tennis has a special place in the history and culture of this country. The ATP Finals are valued by Italian fans and this connection is now with Jannik Sinner as world number 1. stronger than ever. We look to the future with excitement and confidence.”
