Ocean sailor Boris Herrmann is right on track for the Vendée Globe. The 43-year-old Hamburg resident moved up to third place on Friday morning. After an overall bumpy start with technical problems that caused him to fall far behind at times, Herrmann is now getting better and better into the rhythm on his “Malizia-Seaexplorer”. At the 10th edition of the Vendée Globe, the British sailor Sam Goodchild led ahead of his French competitor Nicolas Lunven the ranking. Things are tight behind there. Herrmann, the Swiss Justine Mettraux and the Frenchman Yoann Richomme are close together in a field with only 39 participants. The Frenchman Maxim Sorel had to give up: he could no longer cope with the strain due to an ankle injury he suffered on the second day of the race.
Herrmann is relaxed about the coming days, as he reported from on board: “I feel good, physically and mentally. I monitor my mood so that I don’t stress myself out too much or get strange feelings, because there’s no way out on the boat.” The sailors are currently near the Canary Islands. The start and finish of the 45,000 kilometer circumnavigation is the French port town of Les Sables d’Olonne.
