Heading towards Bonne Espérance, Charlie Dalin (Macif Santé Prévoyance) kept Thomas Ruyant (Vulnerable) and Yoann Richomme (Paprec Arkéa) at bay this Monday, despite new records for distance covered in 24 hours for the two sailors in the Vendée Globe.
In total, thanks to the depression created off the coast of Brazil which allowed them to accelerate on Sunday, six boats beat the previous record established between Tuesday and Wednesday by Richomme (551.4 miles covered, or 1,022 km).
But it was the 40-year-old sailor himself who improved this record the most, with 579.86 miles (1,073.9 km) covered in 24 hours, ahead of Rettant (572.4 miles, 1,060.08 km). ).
“We’re not going fast to make the record but above all to try to keep the ideal position with this depression, we don’t know what happens next but, in any case, if we can keep it as long as possible, that’s it. is good, we are getting closer to the objective and the South Seas,” Ruyant explained to the organizers.
At 7:00 p.m. Monday, Dalin continued to hold Ruyant at bay, leading him by 41 miles. Richomme, third, has broken away from four immediate pursuers, but is still 77 miles behind the leader.
Sam Goodchild (Vulnerable) lost two places, going from 4th to 6th, but he is in a close position with 5th, Jérémie Beyou (Charal), and 7th, Nicolas Lunven (Holcim – PRB).
Sébastien Simon (Groupe Dubreuil), climbs to 4th place, 30 miles behind Richomme.
“The match is super close, everyone is going fast, the fleet is really impressive! We’re all there within a hundred miles, in an Imoca it’s rubbish! », Tempered Rettant.
“I just did a little peak at 32 knots, I feel like a little animal in this hull going at Mach 12! But survival is going well,” joked the 6th in the previous Vendée Globe.
Obviously, these crazy speeds are the envy of the rest of the fleet, deprived of the windfall, like Louis Duc (Fives Group-Lantana Environnement), 26th more than 1,000 miles from the lead.
“We have a beautiful depression which will take our comrades with well-propelled foils towards the South Seas, and we will have the crumbs of their depression, we will have to follow the front along the Brazilian coasts,” he said. he lamented.
However, and despite several damages since the start, there is no reason to shy away from his pleasure for the Manchois, a novice south of the Equator and who is “looking forward to discovering these landscapes, these seas, these long swells”.
