An extraordinary evening for the 2nd Badminton Bundesliga South: On the last match day, SV GutsMuths Jena and HSG DHfK Leipzig played a rousing match that was not only a sporting highlight, but also an atmospheric one. With 506 spectators A new record for a 2nd league game was set on site. The special atmosphere in the hall was noticeable right from the start and contributed to the meeting being a real success – even beyond the region. For the first time, a game in the 2nd Bundesliga was broadcast live from MDR transferred and commented. This premiere attracted additional attention and underlined the importance of badminton in Germany. Michael Otto from the host club SV Unterpörlitz summed up the importance of the event: “We have to get to the people with our sport.” The record viewership and the positive response to the broadcast show how important it is to take badminton out of the hall and into the public. In the end, Jena won 6-1, but that didn’t change the mood of both teams.
In addition to the highlight from Ilmenau, the weekend had even more to offer: TSV Neuhausen-Nymphenburg secured the lead in the table after a 5-2 win over TuS Geretsried. However, three of the matches played were only decided in the fifth set. Excitement for the second half of the season is guaranteed! Furthermore, the TV Marktheidenfeld team set an exclamation mark by defeating last season’s champions 6-1. In the Second League North there was a derby between the second teams from Beuel and Refrath: with a good atmosphere and, in true Beuel style, a show, exciting matches developed between the teams. In the end, Refrath was ahead and won 5:2. The weekend also went well for STC BW Solingen, who were able to win clearly against the strong newcomers from Sterkrade-Nord.
Meanwhile, 1. CfB Köln and SV BerlinerBrauen had to clearly admit defeat to their opponents from Wipperfeld and Trittau.
