‘The children’s hand at Ajax is quickly filled,’ concludes Wim Kieft after the 0-2 win over Feyenoord in De Kuip on Wednesday evening. In his weekly column on behalf of The Telegraph let the Amsterdammer know that the joy of the supporters is exaggerated.

Kieft believes that Ajax mainly owes the surprising three-pointer to two goalkeeping errors by Feyenoord goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther. “After the quick lead, Ajax mainly defended, especially in the second half.”

The former top striker uses Ajax’s attack leader as an example. “Wout Weghorst had a great heading opportunity just after half-time, but otherwise he may have hit ten balls because Ajax was mainly concerned with defending. Weghorst’s contribution as an obstacle says enough about how Ajax manifested itself in De Kuip,” said Kieft.

Kieft indicates that Ajax’s current style of play can still be tolerated in this build-up phase. “Only trainer-coach Francesco Farioli will have to make progress with his team in terms of football. Ajax owes it to its position to further develop in possession of the ball, because that remains poor.”

Kieft is looking forward to the match between Ajax and PSV on Saturday evening at 6.45 pm for a special reason. “Whether the Eredivisie will still be exciting depends on that match. It was thought that PSV would lose its unapproachable status without Jerdy Schouten and Joey Veerman, but the alternatives in midfield with Ismael Saibari and Malik Tillman deliver. Together with Noa Lang, these two are the great top talents at PSV.”

“This trio has the creativity to make a difference at a higher level. “After Feyenoord-Ajax, Ajax-PSV is not only a nice test case for Ajax, but at the same time the PSV trio can show that their ceiling is higher than PSV,” concludes Kieft.

The match between Ajax and PSV will be refereed on Saturday by Serdar Gözübüyük. The match between Feyenoord and AZ will follow in De Kuip at 9 p.m. Dennis Higler has been appointed as referee of that match.
