“You have to know how to assimilate this result,” says Rueda after the victory against Mexico

Tegucigalpa, Nov 15 (EFE).- The coach of Honduras, Reinaldo Rueda, said this Friday after the 2-0 victory against Mexico, in the first leg of the quarterfinals of the Concacaf Nations League, that “You have to know how to assimilate this result.”

“That is the challenge, to know how to assimilate this result, to capitalize on that great effort and those three points, those two goals, that we have the mental control and balance to assimilate it, it was a very difficult match,” Rueda stressed at a press conference at the Francisco Morazán Stadium, in San Pedro Sula, northern Honduras.

He added that “the Mexican team is a very competitive team” and that the victory against El Tri, coached by Javier Aguirre, should serve “to continue believing in the Honduran players, who must be surrounded, must be loved, must be support them (..) and continue demanding of them because they can give more and that is the commitment.”

Rueda began his statements to the press “with sadness for everything that happened in the end,” when Aguirre was hit with a can thrown by a fan from the stadium stands.

“That cannot happen again, neither here, nor in any stadium in Honduras, nor in any stadium in the world. I am sad because he is a human being, because just as they hit the teacher, they could have hit me, he was to say hello at that moment,” he stressed.

In addition, he apologized “to the entire delegation of Mexico, to all the Mexican people, to Professor Aguirre” for the incident and stressed that “that cannot happen, especially in our society.”

The hero of Honduras was Luis Palma, a Celtic player from Scotland, who scored both goals against Mexico.

Crying, Palma dedicated the goals and Honduras’ victory to his recently deceased grandmother, whom he said “represented a lot” in his life and showed her to the fans in a photograph printed on a white t-shirt. EFE
