Tennis star Alexander Zverev has reached the semi-finals of the ATP tournament in Paris. In the quarterfinals of the indoor masters, Hamburg’s Stefanos Tsitsipas, who had recently been suffering from health problems, beat Stefanos Tsitsipas 7:5, 6:4 after 100 minutes on Friday.

For Zverev it was only the sixth win in the 16th game against the Greek, the 27-year-old used his first match point. “He was better at the beginning, but then I found my rhythm from the baseline“Zverev said on the pitch:”And when I had my chance, I took it in the first set.

The world number three also further extended his personal record with his 64th victory this season. He will now face Holger Rune (Denmark) or the Australian Alex de Minaur in the semi-finals on Saturday. Zverev is still two wins short of his 23rd individual title on the ATP tour – and his debut success in Paris. In 2020 he lost the final there against Daniil Medvedev.

Play at eye level

Both players fought a duel on equal terms – and so a double fault from Tsitsipas caused the only break in the first round, which Zverev secured after 57 minutes.

In the second set, the Hamburg player finally took control of the game and confidently won the game. Zverev was only the fourth player ever to reach at least the round of 16 in all nine Masters tournaments within one year. Nevertheless, he has “only” one tournament victory (Rome) to his credit so far in 2024.

In the semi-finals for the 20th time

With his success over Tsitsipas, he now reached his 20th semi-final at a Masters event – of the currently active players, only superstars Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have achieved this. The Tokyo Olympic champion’s battery is practically empty after several injuries and illnesses. After the tournament in France’s capital, he still wants to play at the ATP Finals in Turin.
